The Ultimate American Machine
Since it was first unveiled nearly sixty years ago, the Dodge Charger has defined the American sports driving experience. It was in those earliest iterations that it helped define the most American of all eras; the Muscle Car era.
And thanks to its reinvention and reintroduction roughly a decade-and-a-half ago as one of the most powerful sedans ever built, today’s Charger stands alongside those giants of yesteryear, redefining what it means to be a snarling sports car built right here in the USA.
And whether it’s the GT all-wheel-drive model, the classic Scat Pack or R/T, or of course the mighty and world-conquering Hellcat, today’s Charger is pushing into tomorrow, and, like the Charger always had, it’s heading there fast.
The Lineup
Since the contemporary Charger was unleashed in 2006, it’s had several iterations, trim levels, options packages, and combinations. Frankly, too many to list here. But what we can talk about are some of the most common powertrains you’ll find in a used Charger.
When a “base” motor gets you 300-horsepower and 250+ pound-feet of torque, you know you’re onto something. Because that’s what you’ll find in the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6, which, while it’s the least powerful of the Charger lineup, it’ll still smoke most anything else on the road.
Step up a level, and you’ll find yourself behind one of the most legendary motors ever built. That is, the 5.7-liter Hemi V8. Yeah, that motor. There, you’ll find 370 horses and nearly 400 pound-feet of torque at your service.
Of course, with a Hemi, you can almost always get more. That is why some of you will find what you need behind the wheel of a 392 Hemi V8 and its Earthquaking, asphalt-shaking 485-horsepower and 475 pound-feet of ground-twisting torque.
And for the truly adventurous amongst you, the rare driver who sees nearly 500 horses and pound-feet and thinks, “I need more,” you’ll have to get behind the wheel of a 6.2-liter Hemi SRT Hellcat V8. Because that’ll get you over 700 supercharged horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. In other words, one of the strongest production vehicles ever built.
